In the foothills of the Himalaya lies India's first national park and also one of her finest. Initially known as the Ramganga National Park, it was renamed in 1957 as Corbett National Park, in honour and memory of the late Jim Corbett, the legendary, hunter-naturalist turned author and photographer who helped in demarcating the park's boundaries and setting it up.

LOCATION: Situated in the hilly districts of Pauri Garhwal and Nainital of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. The area in the Himalayan foothills in which the park is situated is known as the South Patlidun.
Corbett is, in fact, a large valley with its long axis from east to west. Through this valley run three thickly forested ridge systems roughly parallel to one another and in the same direction. Small offshoots of these ridges run north to south and valley formed in between are known as sots. The lake in corbett park has a large number of water birds, both migrants and others. Crocodiles - both the long -snouted, fish-eating (gharial) and the mugger have founded homes here and their numbers have increased.

INHABITANTS: Over 50 mammal, 580 bird and 25 reptile species have been listed in Corbett. The insect life is itself astounding. Corbett is well known for its tiger - as there is plentiful prey - four kinds of deer, wild boar and other lesser animals for them to live on. Also seen are leopards, the sloth bear, the himalayan black bear, jackal. the indian gray mongoose, blacknaped hare, porcupine, elephants, wild boar, langur and many more.
