Himalayan Railway
A not to be missed experience
is to arrive in Darjeeling
on what is surely the most famous and the mose spectacular
steam railway in the world. New
Jalpaiguri, 86 Km from Darjeeling
is the starting point, and the zig zag journey over
steep gradients and around sharp curves takes 8 to 10
hours. The journey lodges itself in the mind forever
as the ey ranges over peaks, valleys, gorges, terraced
fields, villages and temples perched precariously in
the folds of the mountains.

Nilgiri Mountain Railways
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which takes one to Ootacamund
is about 5 hours, continues
to amaze and delight as one of the oldest and the steepest,
fully operational rack and adhesion rail systems in
the world. The total stretch is peaceful and romantic
and the train gently chugs through the quiet woods and
gentle hills on its way to Ootacamund.
The train passes through 250 bridges and 16 tunnels
en route.

Kangra Valley Railway
Kangra Valley Railway is
a reminder that despite difficult terrain, railway engineers
can create a work which exist in harmony with natural
beauty of the locale. The route was opened for traffic
on April 1, 1929. The route has 20 crossing stations,
& passenger halts, 971 bridges on this line.
The train 'Kangra Queen' runs
between Pathankot and Palampur and takes 4 hours 25
minutes with two stoppages at Jwalamukhi
and Kangra.
Kalka-Shimla Railway
The best way to appreciate the grandeur of the 96 km
long and 2.6 feet narrw gauge track as it climbs through
the foot hills of the Himalayas, is to travel by the
toy train. The line was opened for traffic on November
9, 1903. The train passes through 103 tunnels and over
869 bridges.
Matheran Light Railway
Matheran
means "Jungle Head" or "Forest on Top"
and that is exactly Matheran
is. At 700 feet above sea level, 108 km from Mumbai,
Matheran
is situated literally at the edge of the Western Ghats.
The Hill Railway at matheran was built in 1900 and the
line was opened in March 1907. The whoe journey is full
of picturesque views.
Timings:
Toy train starting from Neral at 8.40 am, 11 am and
5 pm. In the opposite direction at 5.45 am, 1.10 pm
and 2.35 pm. The total route is of 13 km.
