Shimla
Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and is a very charming
hill resort. It was the favourite summer resort of the British
when their troops set up camp here in 1819. At an altitude
of 2,130 meters, the town is a beautiful place. With the Mall
and Ridge being main attractions, there are also good walking
options. You can, for example, start your walk from Scandal
point and Ridge, and a 2 Kms walk takes you to the Jakhoo
hill which offers an excellent panoramic view of Shimla and
the Hanuman Temple
What to See
Shimla offers many attractions such as the Rashtrapati Niwas,
formerly the residence of the British Viceroy, the State Museum,
which houses a modest collection of stone statues from different
parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jakhu Temple, dedicated to Lord
Hanuman, Summer Hill, Chadwick Fall, Prospects Hill, Sankat
Mochan, Tara Devi and Windflower Hall. Kufri, a well - known
ski resort in Himachal Pradesh, is 16 kilometres from Shimla.
When to Visit
The best time to visit is from October to November. Between
December and February, winter sets in with temperatures around
zero degree Celsius, and heavy snowfall in the area. April,
May, and June are peak seasons for local tourists, when other
parts of the country are very hot.
HOW TO REACH
By Rail
You will get the trains from almost all the Main Stations
like from Bombay and Delhi to Kalka. Kalka is the railway
Staion where you have to get down and change the train from
Broad Gauge to Narrow Gauge line. Everyday ,Himalayan Queen
and Howrah Express leave from Delhi to Kalka. There is special
Coach fitted in this train for a group of 6 to 8. The train
passes almost 103 tunnels and so many bridges, that this is
a really good experience for everyone, not to miss. From Bombay,
You will get Rajdhani Express / A.K. Rajdhani Express / Golden
Temple Mail for Bombay to Delhi.
By Air
Indian Airlines, Archan and Jagsons have their regular flights
from Chandigarh, Delhi, Dharamshala and Kullu. You will be
arriving at "Jubber Bhatti" which is recently constructed
airport which is at a distance of 28 Km from the town area.
By Road
You will get Deluxe and Luxury Buses from Delhi, from Kalka
during whole day enrouting from National Highway 22. If you
are a member of WIAA, You will also get a road map at a nominal
fees for Kalka to Shimla or from Delhi to Shimla route.
