kms from Ajmer on the edge of the desert lies the tiny tranquil
town of Pushkar along the banks of the picturesque Pushkar
lake – an important pilgrimate spot for Hindus.
The
“Nag Pahar” or the snake mountain form a natural boundary
between Ajmer and Pushkar.

According
to legend, the Pushkar
Lake has mythological significane associated with it.
Pushkar dates back to the time when Lord Brahma was on his
way in search of a tranquil land to perform a “Yagna”. A lotus
fell from the hand of the lord into this valley. The lake
sprang up on this spot and was dedicated to him. A Brahma
temple located here is a popular place of pilgrimage.
Surrounded by hills on three sides, Pushkar abounds in temples.
Of these the most famous is the Brahma
temple – the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in the
country. The temple is marked by a red spire and over the
entrance gateway is a beautiful statue of Hans of goose –
the celestial carrier of Lord Brahma.
The holy lake has 52 ghats and pilgrims takings a ritual dip
in the lake is a common site.
Pushkar
fair
Pushkar is famous for one of the most colourful fairs
of India. Lakhs of pilgrims throng the lake druing the annual
cattle fair. Besides trading of horses, camels, cows and bulls,
there are exciting camel cart races and cultural events. On
the full moon of Kartik (Nov) pilgrims take a holdy dip in
the lake.
