Founded as a port in 1743, Bhavnagar is still an important trading
post for the cotton goods manufactured in Gujarat. It is a sprawling
city with distinctly separate old and new sections. It has not
many interesting places to visit and travellers stay here overnight
to visit Palitana – 51 kms from Bhavnagar and famous for Jain
temples.
Palitana
The town of Palitana is
little more than a gateway to Shatrunjaya, the Place of Victory.
The 600m ascent from the base of the hill to the summit is a
walk of some two kms, up more than 3000 steps. Over a period
of 900 years, 863 temples have been built here.
Almost
all temples are Jain and this hill, is one of Jainism’s holiest
pilgrimage. The temples are grouped into nine enclosures or
tunks – each with a central major temple and many minor ones
clustered around. Some of the temples were built in 11th
century but were destroyed by Muslims in the 14th
and 15th century, so the current temples date from
16th century onwards.
The
most notable of the temples is dedicated to Shri Adishwara,
the first Jain Tirthankar. Built in 1618 by a wealthy Jain merchant,
the Chaumukh or the four faced shrine, has images of Adinath
facing out in the four cardinal directions. Other important
temples are those to Kumar Pal, Sampriti Raj and Vimal Shah.
